Husein Haykal menyatakan, Nabi Muhammad dilahirkan di Kota Makkah pada
bulan Agustus tahun 570 M. Kalangan Muslim di seluruh dunia, umumnya
mengambil pandangan Ibnu Hasyim, Ibnu Ishaq, Ibnu Abbas, dan Caussin
tersebut.

Dalam perkembangannya, di lokasi tersebut sempat dibangun sebuah masjid
oleh Al-Khaizuran, ibu dari Khalifah Harun al-Rasyid, khalifah kelima
Dinasti Abbasiyah yang berpusat di Baghdad. Namun, bangunan itu kemudian
dihancurkan dan dijadikan perpustakaan oleh Syekh Abbas Ottoman (1370
H/1950 M).
Seluruh
umat Islam juga percaya bahwa Rasulullah SAW dilahirkan di rumah
kakeknya yang bernama Abdul Muthalib. Rumah itu kini dipercaya telah
dijadikan perpustakaan (Maktabah) Makkah al-Mukarramah. Hal yang sama
juga diakui oleh Muhammad Husein Haykal.
Sejumlah
pihak mengemukakan alasan dijadikannya rumah Abdul Muthalib tersebut
sebagai perpustakaan. Intinya adalah untuk menghindari pemujaan oleh
sebagian umat Islam terhadap tempat tersebut. Bahkan, kalangan Wahabi
sebenarnya bermaksud menghancurkan tempat tersebut. Tujuannya agar
tempat tersebut tidak dijadikan sebagai berhala-berhala baru atau tempat
pemujaan.
Mereka
tidak ingin ada situs-situs Islam yang menjadi sesembahan umat Islam.
Demikian halnya dengan pemerintah Arab Saudi, mereka juga pernah
merencanakan untuk menghancurkan bangunan tersebut dengan maksud untuk
memperluas Masjid al-Haram. Namun, akhirnya dibatalkan.
Kini,
rumah itu telah dijadikan sebagai perpustakaan. Disana-sini dilakukan
renovasi untuk menjaga bangunan tersebut agar tetap terjaga dan
terpelihara. Hanya saja, lokasi tersebut sengaja disembunyikan dari
perhatian khalayak umum agar tidak ada pemujaan terhadap tempat
tersebut. Didalamnya berisi berbagai buku-buku dan literatur sebagai
bacaan umat Islam untuk menggali beragam ilmu pengetahuan.
Menurut
Sirah an-Nabawiyah, tempat kelahiran Nabi Muhammad itu dulunya dikenal
dengan lembah Abu Thalib. Ketika Nabi Muhammad SAW berhijrah ke Madinah,
rumah itu ditempati oleh Aqil bin Abi Thalib, yang kemudian diikuti
oleh anak keturunannya. Selanjutnya, rumah itu dibeli oleh Khizran.

Kini, kaum Muslimin dengan mudah mengenali tempat itu karena diatasnya
tertulis Maktabah Makkah al-Mukarramah yang berarti perpustakaan Makkah
al-Mukarramah.
Konon, bangunan yang berdiri sekarang ini tetap berdiri karena desakan
Wali Kota Makkah, Syekh Abbas Qaththan, yang meminta agar Raja Saudi
Arabia, King Abdul Aziz, mengizinkannya untuk membangun perpustakaan di
tempat tersebut. Akhirnya terwujudlah bangunan itu.
Bangunan yang ada sekarang ini ukurannya sekitar 10x18 meter.
Dibandingkan dengan bangunan lainnya, bangunan ini sangat sederhana
sekali. Bahkan, oleh pemerintah Arab Saudi, bangunan itu terkadang
dibiarkan terkunci diakibatkan adanya kekhawatiran akan terjadi pemujaan
terhadap tempat itu.
Selain buku-buku, di bagian sebelah kiri bangunan itu digunakan sebagai
gudang untuk menyimpan barang-barang yang tak terpakai. Sementara pada
bagian kanan, langsung berhadapan dengan tempat pengambilan air Zamzam.
Bagian belakangnya berbatasan dengan jalanan yang biasa dilalui baik
oleh masyarakat maupun jamaah haji (dan umrah) yang ingin melaksanakan
ibadah ke Masjid al-Haram.
Sungguh sangat memperihatinkan bila melihat kondisi bangunan itu.
Dibandingkan dengan sejumlah bangunan yang ada di Makkah lainnya, tempat
yang dipercaya sebagai rumah kelahiran nabi akhir zaman itu, sangat
sederhana di negeri yang kaya dengan minyak itu.
